Fishing at Simuni, island of Pag
You reach Simuni by taking the ferry from Prizna or via a bridge from the Zadar side. The island of Pag, seen from the mainland side, looks like a lunar landscape with no vegetation, because of the force of the bora, which blows very hard here (gusts of 240 km/h are not rare); the cliffs are very high and almost always unreachable by land. Once on the island of Pag by ferry, head towards Novalja and then south towards the town of Pag; on the left you will notice one of the few places in Croatia where there is sand even out of the water, because it was brought in by trucks to create a beach; the place is called Simuni.
Both from the campsite beach and from the two headlands that border it and the surrounding areas, you can fish over medium-deep bottoms, from 10 to 25 metres, characterised by sand and posidonia meadows. Relatively easy and comfortable to reach, all the fishing spots in this area are rich in gilthead bream, white seabream, common pandora and huge striped seabream, even of 1.5 kg.
In summer you can stay at the campsite (well equipped and very convenient for fishing, both by day and by night), while in the other seasons you can go in by simply asking the guards for permission. Simuni is one of the few places where soft worms work particularly well; in fact lugworms, ragworms, American worms and tremolina worms are deadly for striped seabream, while the classic Rimini worm is excellent for gilthead bream. The spot has proved particularly productive in late autumn and in spring, with gilthead bream, striped seabream and some big white seabream.
Simuni is well sheltered from the bora, but open to all southerly and northerly winds. From Italy it takes about 4 hours by car, ferry included (270 km).
