Fishing at San Martino (Martinsčica), island of Cres

San Martino (Martinsčica)San Martino (Martinsčica) is on the island of Cres, which is reached either from the mainland at Brestova or from the island of Krk. Once on the island, go straight on to the junction for San Martino and turn right down to the sea. If you decide to reach Cres by taking the ferry from Brestova, bear in mind that in case of strong bora or south-westerly winds the ferry does not sail because of the rough sea. The alternative is then to reach Cres from the island of Krk, which is connected to the mainland by a bridge, taking the ferry from the town of Valbiska. There, being much more sheltered, the ferry service is almost always guaranteed.

The seafront of San Martino (Martinsčica) is a beach of sand and pebbles, interspersed with wooden piers of various sizes. The seabed is on average 8/15 metres deep, with large patches of sand and banks of posidonia, and few rocks. Towards the two headlands that close the bay of San Martino, however, the bottom changes: many more rocks and depths of up to 25/30 metres.

Gilthead bream, white seabream, common pandora and weever are the most common catches, while in the local small harbour there are sea bass to die for, both on the bottom with live bait and near the surface with shrimp.

At night the big conger eels are not long in coming if you bait with sardine or squid, while by day the Rimini worm, bibi worms and murex are recommended for the good-sized gilthead bream present in spring and summer, until late autumn. San Martino is reasonably sheltered from south-easterly winds and from the bora, and completely open to the south-west and north-west.
A characteristic feature is certainly the pit in the middle of the bay, about 55/60 metres deep, once used as a tuna trap.
